In a lull we look for deeper meaning. We see symbols and assign stories to our reality. We can divide fact from fantasy, limiting beliefs from greater truths. Exploring the subconscious invites in strange coincidence and happenings, and most of all greater self awareness.

The first issue of Lull came to me fairly easily. I was in a depression in the winter of 2018 after a pretty gnarly bike accident. I was questioning what I was doing 15 years into my freelance design career. It was hard to look at all the missing pieces of the puzzle and understand that I couldn’t rush the process of healing, or to find another client to pay the bills. I turned to the one thing I felt could help me face this uncertainty having been a devout atheist all of my life. Tarot, a subject I had dabbled in for many years, became a daily practice. I bought a deck just to learn about the meaning of the cards. In practice and with meditations, it helped me have hope to keep moving and never give up on my abilities for empathy, compassion and perseverance, especially related to my strengths as a creative person.

The creative professionals and artists in this issue (including myself) have struggled with generating ideas and purpose in their work after years in the industry. When it comes to creative outlets and getting back to your most beloved passions, sometimes all it takes is a deep dive into your dreams, or allowing visualizations to permeate your everyday work.

Lull began this exploration in March 2019 with a road trip to Yosemite National Park for a photoshoot with two great friends and my best friend from Boston, photographer Heather McGrath. From there we were inspired again by the vastness of nature and our combined visions for this issue’s theme on tarot, dreams and making our own magic happen.

There is a liberating quality to opening up expansive and evocative ways of thinking like that of the Tarot and other types of spiritual beliefs or metaphysical understandings. In the issue of FATE, we’ve gathered imagery, interviews and stories from working creatives and artists that found their way to their truest expressions by knowing how to harness the unconscious and their intuition to make ideas of fantasy and destiny into a reality.

In this issue

Tarot as Inspiration

Three visual artists were asked to make works inspired by the stories and characters from the Major Arcana. These long recognized tarot archetypes and symbols opened up new channels for visual exploration and interpretation.

A limited run card series and the collector's edition magazine includes their insights and personal stories about harnessing their creative process when facing the unknown.
